The St. Bernard Project, the group they founded, initially focused on rebuilding homes in St. Bernard and Orleans parishes using the labor of more than 35,000 volunteers. Over the years, the St. Bernard Project’s mission has expanded. The Center for Wellness and Mental Health, a partnership with the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, treats people suffering from post-storm and post-BP-oil-disaster mental health problems. Their Opportunity Housing program offers affordable homes at below market rates. And their in-house construction company, Good Work Good Pay, puts to work veterans and the local unemployed.
But he said there must also be accompanying improvements in the recovery system that he feels lacks accountability. Tangible objectives, such as a setting a time benchmark for getting people back into their homes after a disaster, should be standard in any such program. SBP will continue to build homes, Rosenburg said, with an emphasis on affordable housing for veterans and seniors. But its initiatives now include sharing its expertise with other nonprofits. Our waiting list is over 120 people and folks are still coming to us every day. We think there are about 8,000 families who own homes they can’t afford to rebuild.

Despite their successes, however, Rosenburg and McCartney were keenly aware of their limitations. She immigrated to the United States when she was a young adult. She became a nurse, married, had 2 children, became a social worker, and ran a business. Throughout her life, she has gone out of her way to help other newcomer families get settled into new homes, jobs, and schools. She speaks 5 languages and has sometimes acted as a translator.

Years after Hurricane Katrina, many families were still unable to rebuild or repair their devastated homes. The St. Bernard Project created a volunteer network of skilled laborers to help rehabilitate thousands of homes still damaged from the storm. Pamela, a daycare center manager who saved up to purchase her first home by working as an accountant, fled New Orleans with her two-year old daughter just prior to Katrina. With her home destroyed, Pamela moved nine times around the country.

The color is typically a red shade with white, or a mahogany brindle with white. Eyes are usually brown, but sometimes can be icy blue, and should have naturally tight lids, with haws only slightly visible. And that meant more New Orleans residents were able to return home faster than before.

The need in New Orleans remains great, even 10 years after Hurricane Katrina. While St. Bernard Project has rebuilt 612 houses in New Orleans, there are 5,000 families who still are displaced. The organization gets 15 to 20 requests every week from new clients who haven’t been able to move home, or folks who live in derelict homes because they can’t afford to go anywhere else. Thanks to its teams of volunteers, SBP continues to rebuild homes.
